Mochakottai Kuzhambu - A famous South Indian recipe is well known for its taste. I just LOVE it....
Easy to make recipe, tastes good with rice but, awesome side dish for idli, dosa or even chappathi.
Ingredients :
Dry Mochakottai/val whole beans | 1 cup |
Drumsticks | 1 (cut lengthwise) |
Onions | 2 (medium sized) |
Tomato | 3 |
Coconut (Shredded) | 4 tblsp |
Ginger Garlic Paste | 3 tsp |
Chilli Powder | 1 tsp (or as needed ) |
Coriander Powder | 1/2 tsp ( optional) |
Turmeric Powder | 1/2 tsp |
Mustard Seeds | 1 tsp |
Curry Leaves | 1 sprig |
Water | 2 cups ( Or as needed ) |
Oil | |
Salt |
Method :
- Wash the mochakottai(val beans) and Soak it overnight
- Next day before cooking just wash it again twice
- Pressure cook it with salt and water (Mostly in 3 whistles it gets cooked)
- Do not leave it till it gets mashed, just cook it till it is firm and soft
- Once cooked, drain the water in a cup(this can be used for the gravy instead of using plain water) and keep the mochakottai seperate
- Cut the onions and tomatoes, divide it into 2 parts, one part for grinding and the other to saute
- Grind the coconut in a mixer
- Add 1 part of the onion and tomato and grind it together with the coconut as a paste
- Heat the sauce pan with oil
- Add mustard, curry leaves and remaining portion of onions and saute it
- You can Add a pinch of salt for the onions to cook faster
- Once the onions are partially cooked add the ginger garlic paste and saute for 2 mins
- Add the tomato, chilli powder, coriander powder(optional), turmeric powder, and drumsticks and the ground paste
- Once the drumsticks are cooked and the raw smell wears off
- Add the cooked mochakottai and stir
- Add water which we kept earlier from the cooked beans, it is optional as some people don't prefer this water, I personally think we have the nutrients left in the water once we cook it, it serves like a starch, so i don't prefer to drain them
- Bring it to a boil
- Now it is ready to be served
Enjoy it with Rice, or as a side for idli, dosa or chappathi..... Hmmmm Yummmy....
